Just walking around in the playground in Karl Schurz Park around 11 pm. My friend Bobby was with me, also looking for “a good shot.” As soon as I saw these two guys playing a board game – it struck me that chess was the perfect game to shoot at night as there was vey little movement on the part of these players.
And then there was the moon in the background. So I watched and thought about the f-stop and shutter speed. I believe the shutter speed was in the one “minute range. This was back in 1995, and is still one of my favorite shots.

After Poet’s Walk this is the next best selling print on the site. This was in Carl Schurz Park on the upper east side. This goes back to 1995 or so. Sometimes the city looks like something from a fairy tale – taken with a 4 x 5 view camera, with a black cloth over my head during a snow storm in Karl Shurz park. After the shot was taken, the black cloth on my head had 3 inch layer of snow on it. Why is it that most of my favorite shots were taken in extremely cold weather?
Hi Dave,
I received ‘Night Storm’ yesterday. It arrived safely. Thank You for packaging it so well. The print is so beautiful. The image of it on your web site can’t compare to the actual print itself. My wife took it to a picture frame/gallery store to buy me a frame for Christmas. She told me that when the store owner saw the print his first reaction was “WOW! Who is this guy? Is he new?”

Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. The Empire State Building (dead ahead). And my eyes and fingers. I have to admit that after I took this shot, I began to see the same vantage point used millions of times in car commercials. It’s fairly iconic. I usually don’t know it at the time, but a lot of what I’ve done is repetitive – though with a slight twist on shots that have been done before. Feininger has a good shot from almost the same point where I was standing.

Brooklyn Bridge. One of the things you could do with a view camera was straighten out the perspective with tilts and swings. Here I was actually looking up at the bridge but it appears as if I’m level with it. 1995
One of the top 10 New York City tourist attractions.
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge. There are many walking tours offered of the bridge.
