So here’s the same subject – but as a street shot with the 500D rather than the previous posed shot.

I heard Dunkin Donuts has been posting enforcers in front of Starbucks cafes to intimidate their patrons. Guys like this don’t need to resort to knocking frappucinos from cutomer’s hands to make their message clear – the Dunkin Donuts down the block has good plain coffee, and next time I see you, you better be drinking it.

I should also put up a warning to beginners: Don’t Try This at On Your Own. I think it comes through, but he is a scary dude.

  3. Lester says:

Thanks for the warning, Dave. I don’t want to end up snapping photos with my sphincter muscles.

Risking your life for your art Dave. That’s dedication…

    500D looks incredibly clean.

Lester – If you do, I’d like to be on hand (sphincter?) to document this!

Dave, that’s the homeless-ish guy who spends 5 hours/day at the Starbucks on 81st/2nd.

Greg, Maplethorpe got nothing on me.

Aw, I bet he’s a pussycat at heart.

Elliot – he drinks a lot of Starbucks for a homeless-ish guy. Yes, that’s the Starbucks where I keep running into him. He actually singled me out. He just said, “How ya doin’”
And I said something like, “Do I know you?”
And he said, “Yeah. You’re the professional photographer, right?”
I said, yeah. And then he said, “Yeah, I figured. I always see you takin’ pictures.”
If you looked into his eyes, you could see that there was something off with him. I think he’s heavily medicated. It feels like he’s looking at you through a heavy curtain.

I tend to hit Starbucks on the weekends for Espresso – though I have my own machine – theirs is still much better. So that’s one of my treats. And he’s always there, sipping Starbuck’s coffee.

I notice other “regulars” there who hang out for hours. I like that Starbucks. I don’t drink – so it’s sort of like a bar for me – and I’ll also hang out there and read the Times on my iPhone, keeping an eye out for possible pictures. The people who work there know me as the guy with the camera and never give me a hard time as far as shooting goes so long as I’m not too obvious about it.

    Favorite coffee: trip tall latte.

If you like espresso, the best espresso on the UES is now at the newly opened Luna Espresso where the old Dunkin Donuts used to be, at 83rd/1st Ave. The next good espresso would be at Joe_The_Art_Of_Coffee, all the way over on W. 84th St.

Luna’s owners bought two Clover coffee machines (patented machines whose company got bought out by Starbucks a couple of years ago, then Starbucks stopped selling the machines!) from an espresso bar that went out of business, and they’re selling coffee at half the price Clover cups go for downtown ($3 here, $6-$8 in Soho). They’ve got awesome drip coffee ($2.50), cold-brewed iced coffee, and great espresso. They get fresh-roasted beans from a local roaster that’s owned by Intelligentsia Coffee. A local friend of mine who’s even more of a coffee geek than me went to Luna … then sold his $900 espresso machine on Craigslist.
