These were all shot with the 28mm on the cropped sensor 450 infrared modded camera.  It’s fine for that camera, but I don’t like it much on the full frame.  Too hard not to get converging lines, whereas on the cropped sensor it really is easy to use and more like a “normal” lens.  Nothing new about that – I was using the 30mm Sigma for a long time.  Same idea.  But when I was first using it on the 5D I was like – man – got keep this damned thing straight, which was why I bought the grid screen for the 5D which helped, though wasn’t much use in low light.  And frankly, I still feel more comfortable walking around with the little 450d than with the 5D.  I’ve already done lots of large prints with the 450D (one was 50 inches wide) without any major issues with artifacts, though of course it goes through a very good extrapolation program (ProZoom?) and if I know it’s going to go big, I’ll lower the ASA to 200.

On the other hand, the 5D still gives better results at 1600 ASA than the 40D or the 450D.  No doubt about that.

If money were no obstacle, you’d still feel comfortable with your mint M3 and a few rolls of TRI-X,
but with all the creature comforts you’ve decided to do without in the name of art, I won’t give you a
hard time about your camera of choice…At least for the next month or so…

  2. Thanks Matt. I’ll await your reminder with baited breath.

But frankly, I remember changing that HIE in a changing bag (which I think you told me once you never needed) in the summer heat. And now they don’t make HIE though I guess there are other nice IR films around. But I really did like that HIE, and yes, I liked the M3. In fact, I think I shot with that camera longer than any other until it started to fall apart. What a viewfinder. Maybe when that movie project is released and I become a star, someone will give me a mint M3 with a nice 50mm f1.4. For some reason, I never had that feeling of emotional attachment to the M6, but I did have it for the m3.

  3. You guys are funny! Benny Hill is rolling!
