Times Square Paper Delivery.  Infrared and “faux” HDR

ir-paper-delivery

p.s. I’m doing so much color work lately that I changed the blog name.

p.p.s. No sales since I raised the prices.  Still too early to say that’s an issue, but I have gone back and added 5 x 7’s.  Then wait awhile and if still no sale, then I’ll add mats back.  And wait.  And then… well, then I can say that people won’t pay these prices and have to lower them and go back to doing my own printing, unless I come up with some other ideas.

Bet you never saw anything

like this – and may hope not to see anything like it again…

This has the kitchen sink thrown in.  Digital infrared camera, infrared flash! and hdr!  the only thing it’s missing is a manual with a glossary of terms and raison d’etre.  But not to worry, I have some ideas for this technique that won’t read like a heat chart…

Let Yourself Go

Searching for images for J. I come across tons of stuff that I would like to try some of these new HDR and Exposure Fusion techniques on – though this isn’t one of them.

Night Tango in Central Park

tango-central-park-090009

I just added a new section to the store – ROMANCE and added this shot (infrared film with modified infrared flash).  I had originally thought I could do it in time for Valentine’s Day but frankly I don’t think I could get prints out in time for Valentine’s Day – at least not this year.  Yes, I continue to have about all the work I can handle right now.  But maybe someone will like it for an anniversary gift or just as a gift for any old reason. The ROMANCE CATEGORY.

At any rate, it is certainly rare in terms of how it was done – i.e. using a flash that was modified to only emit infrared light, with HIE film (which I don’t think is made any longer).

And speaking of selling stuff — one thing that’s been on my mind is that I should of course have a newsletter like everyone else.  I’ve found that not everyone uses or understands RSS feeds and so it could be setup (if the user wants it) to drop an email off when new prints are added to the store; or when I have a sale or some wonderful thing has happened that people might like to know about.

On the other hand – I have the blog setup so that it tweets new blog posts and maybe that’s enough.

Buddy – Infrared

leave a comment

.buddy-ir-2873

Obviously, I haven’t done much shooting lately, other than during photo lessons.  I’m still spending most of my time outfitting (supplying) the Zazzle store.  But Buddy is always around to pose when I have a few minutes.  Not exactly as glamorous as say Ed Weston’s models – but just as beautiful in his own way.  This was done with bounced infrared flash and the modded IR camera.   I may have a funny shot with Buddy confronting the big dog on the stairs yesterday – but it needs work (post processing work) and I prob. won’t do it until I get the Zazzle stuff out of my system.  In other words, from everything I’ve read in the Zazzle forums – you really want to have a lot of good quality stuff available – rather than a few select pieces.  More about the 20 / 80 rule in the comments of the previous post (where you’ll also find a deadly funny story by Stephen).

You’ll find this hard to believe, but I’m making FRIDGE TRINKETS over there.  This is the sort of stuff I always thought I’d be working on when I went to the funny farm.  Hmmm, maybe I’m there and don’t know it.  Actually, what happened was that  I have to take medication in the morning and sometimes can’t remember if I took it or not) so I made these FRIDGE MAGNETS that I can just put on the Fridge (hence the name) or wherever and just turn them upside down after I’ve taken my morning pills meds.  I still  have the problem of  remembering to turn them rightside up at night.  Otherwise, when I wake up, I’ll see that the photo magnet is upside down and conclude that I’ve taken my meds.

Horse – Color IR

horse_ir_3091

Came across some color infrared shots that I like.  These were actually done with an IR filter and an unmodified 40d on a tripod (hence the blur and horse movement).  Can’t remember what filter I was using but it was dark enough so that you couldn’t see anything through the viewfinder.  A lot easier with a modified IR camera.  As a general rule, this is the only style of color that I can enjoy with my own photographs, i.e. the number of colors are limited, and it feels more like a watercolor than an oil painting if you know what I mean.  I’ve done some straight color once in a while, and for a few days, I like it – but I almost always tire of it quickly.  The infrared color seems to keep my attention and when I return to it months later – it still appeals to me.

Colgate Clock, New Jersey

one comment

I was told that the Colgate clock, which is on the Colgate building, is an important NJ landmark.  I had never seen it before the Circle Line cruise.  Now I can’t think of what exactly it reminds me of – but something from a comedy with Jimmy Cagney that takes place during the cold war and was I think directed by Billy Wilder.  I can’t remember the name, but the feeling of corporate logos and decrepit areas – it has something to do with that.  Oh, I think that Cagney (now middle-aged) was working for Pepsi Cola.

I think I got my money’s worth from that Circle Line cruise around Manhattan. Maybe one or two other interesting shots, but I’ll be moving on now.

Still going through the shots from the Circle Line… I really did shoot a lot of tourist shots that day, and since at heart I am a tourist, it all works out. Or to put it differently, I’m a tourist who doesn’t go on many tours. Maybe you don’t know what I mean, but I’m pretty sure I do. In other words, wouldn’t it be great to take off and bring the infrared camera to somewhere that it hasn’t been used before. Actually, that was my idea for using it on the Circle Line – and that idea of using equipment in new locations – well that goes back a while.

Same thing I tried to do, no that I did, when I brought the view camera down into the subway car. Let’s take cameras that are usually used for one thing (nature) and use them somewhere else, urban location. It
