You know, as I was working on this shot from about a week ago, I could see that the engravings on this side were still pretty clear.  Lots of dogs, or jackals howling at the top and almost all of the symbols were readable.  Not so much on the west of the needle.  And I got to wondering if this was originally painted like a lot of the ancient Egyptian structures and if so – wouldn’t it be a great project to try and recreate it the way it was originally.

Not knowing much of anything about ancient Egypt other than what I see on the Discovery channel, or in the Metropolitan Museum’s Dendur room – maybe something like that has been done already.  But I wonder if anyone tried it with the Central Park needle.  Which is, always difficult to shoot.  I mean to do the thing right, it would be great to have one of those bucket trucks and really photograph it from top to bottom at a right angle… but still… you could really bring the thing to life again.
