As we made our way around France, I had to force Dirk to detour to Arles for obvious reasons. [I have been told that this is prob. not Arles and I'll go along with that, and just say it was on the way...]
Where exactly…? Dunno. I remember seeing fields where there were lots of nuclear reactors off in the backgroud.
Yes, the light was the same light as Vincent saw, and I could really understand what got him so excited, though my friend Dirk was in a hurry to get to the next spot, where that was, I have no idea now. This entire trip was done with the Rollei TLR. My main mistake was not bringing a tripod, but I ended up buying one during my first week in Paris.
So I don’t know where this was… which is usual. It is somewhere in France. And the time was / is 1991 (Sept).

I must concede that this would be a very nice place to live…I’d even get on a plane if this was ever my destiny…What do you think he or she grows? Bordeaux?
What I remember – was that there was a lot of wheat growing; and in fact they were rolling up wheat (I think that’s what it was, though it could have been any grain) and rollwing it up into golden rolls about five feet high. It all reminded me of Van Gogh images. Did I go to the “yellow house” where Van Gogh lived? We’ll have to see as I get deeper into the pile of negatives. I have a vague memory of seeing this house; but it might also be a clip from the Lust for Life movie. As much as I like Kirk Douglas, he was way too robust a figure to play Van Gogh, who was slight of frame, and generally starving. Quinn was much better casting.
Anyway – not grape growing region. Similar to break-basket area.
Are you sure this is Arles? I don’t remember any moutains (or even hills) around there.
Of course I’m not sure; but right after this shot on the strip are workers bailing up hay; and I do remember thinking about the light in Arles being different; but this was taken before that shot, so prob. you’re right, and it is somewhere between our first stop after leaving Paris, and Arles…
So I should change that name to SOMEWHERE BETWEEN PARIS AND ARLES or at least look at a map… I also remember a lot of nuclear reactors around there which could account for the light
but that could be anywhere in FR.
Don’t look for a picture of the yellow house. It was bombarded in WO II.

Thanks. What a shame. My memory of the trip around France – all of it took a week – is a blur. I remember a fair amount about Paris, but that was because I was there three different times. But France… somewhere we crossed the Alps… which I know I shot and haven’t come across yet; and were in Germany for at least five minutes; and definitely the South of France… I remember one nude beach… first one I’d ever been to; etc. But it was very much of a speeding blur. And my friend wanted to get back to Paris in a hurry because he was going to leave me there and then drive back to his home in Belgium.
