I thought this view camera shot was worth a re-scan. My scanning techniques and cleaning etc. getting better.
It is unfortunate (as always) that the larger the negative, the poorer the translation to the web jpg. But so it goes.
I would compare it to eating a very good chicken parm. sandwich without being able to taste or sense the texture of the breaded chicken, or the freshness of the sauce. You know it’s chicken parm. because of what it looks like, and because it’s what you ordered, but they’ve put a small amount of cotton coating on your tongue, and you just have to live with it.

mmmmm, Chicken Parmi Sandwich. Sounds delicious. Unfortunately schnitties and parmies are off the menu for me at the moment…

would it be fair to say the HDR technique you’ve employed on your 35mm work effectively replicates the longer tonal scale of large format, or is it a mere approximation?
Gee. You ask the tough ones, don’t you
The “tonal range” is the same or greater than doing a “straight” shot with the view camera. But, and this is a big but, the overall look is absolutely not the same, because:
- The grain structure with 35mm HDR is nowhere near as grainless as with a view camera
- Lenses are completely different, i.e. in terms of length, dof etc.
- Tilt and swings are an advantage with the view camera
- And composition on an upside down flipped ground glass – is also an advantage.
However, you asked about tonal range, and they are close enough so that I would say that the tonal range of a properly exposed HDR image is wider, or longer, than that of one view camera shot. Without a doubt.
Now, if you really want to warp your mind a bit – think of doing HDR with a view camera, which is actually a perfect instrument for doing it, i.e. on a tripod, generally static scenes etc.
Dave, was that taken from the footbridge at E78th St?

No. By the stairs where the upper level goes down to lower level at about 82nd.
Ok, cheers. Just trying to pinpoint this on Google Maps
