I figured out how to do voice over, and most of the other stuff to make little films. This was done entirely in Final Cut Express. The main purpose was just to see what it was like to do a voice over. It wasn’t so simple because it turned out that the input jack on the mac needed a pre-amp; and a lot of the effects that were very easy to do in Premiere, even simple stuff like the Titles – was beyond my initial capabilities. Finally I came across Live Type – and saw that was one way to do the titles; and the revolving girl at the end – that shouldn’t be there – it was just that I had finally figured out how to apply various effects to the video.

It took a pretty long time to upload to YouTube – at least a good half hour; maybe more. But frankly, the basics are there, and I forced myself to do them in FCE so that I’ll be working in the common video language of the day.

As far as the film goes. If I were to do it again, I’d make a rig so that the camera is on a cereal box that’s tilted up, and use the 20mm lens. I would have to have a 2nd camera around my neck – something really small in case I really did come across a good shot. It was funny, in the beginning, the guy in the dairy section bends down by the camera, his head is a few inches away. He doesn’t seem to make anything of it, nor does anyone else. In other words, why would someone put their camera in their shopping cart on top of a bunch of food? Doesn’t seem to pique anyone’s curiosity.

  1. Dave,

I have followed your movie-making efforts here and finally decided to comment on this one. Multi-media is a fascinating thing, and we can get wrapped up in making this stuff. BUT, will it generate you any revenue? Probably not, unless you are doing it for a client.

I have been producing multi-media for one client and they are very happy–audio slide shows with still photography and a little mix of video. We are doing interviews, voice overs, still images, video promos. It is a mix of everything.

I am still working on producing video for either one of my web sites and wondering how it actually will generate income. Will I be able to sell prints because of a video? I don’t think so. Prints because of my writing and/or audio storytelling. That’s what I’m banking on.

I have been doing voice overs. If you want a few pointers, give me a call–equipment and technique.

    Brent

  2. Hmmm . . . beyond the commercial issues, have you thought about some sort of steadicam?

There’s a fine line between some jerkiness and too much jerkiness . . .

But then, maybe a steadicam, even an amateur one, would be too obtrusive?

  3. Has everything got to generate revenue? Art for arts sake or money for Gods sake!
