But for a few small figures on the steps, this shot feels like an Escher drawing. I would wonder what we could find at the bottom. There are things that can't be seen in the image but there are small handles at the very bottom, that look like you'd lift them and find more stairs to somewhere.

The photograph was taken (film) on the upper east side of New York, near the East River. The reality of the shot is more mundane. It is the entrance, obviously looking down, to where all the controls of a high rise are kept. Ventilator shafts on the right and a lot of small doors that contain entrances to the electrical and steam facilities.

But I'd rather see it as a design. I'd like to think back to when the architect was sitting over a drafting table sketching out what this part of the elevation would look like.
