Who knows when this was shot. At least ten years ago. It’s almost directly across from 47th street. You can make out the Intrepid. It’s pretty damned close to the Andreas Feininger shot I was trying to emulate. I think he was the first photographer that I felt a real affinity to when I started shooting seriously. Adams was a great technical teacher for me, but his subject matter didn’t turn me on. Feininger was more of an experimentalist – which is what attracted me to him. Of course his shot was done with big Bertha – and this is just lowly 35mm film. And on top of that, just a flat boring sky. Oh well. Can’t have everything. Still, the detail is pretty amazing. There’s a clock on one of the buildings. It reads: 2:20.
