2009. Lucky winter day. Mist on the lake, and lots of cold rushing water. 20 million gallons a day makes it’s way to New York City. Infrared. So close to the city, yet it was a desolate place the day I was there. It is said that more masonry was used to build this dam than is in the great pyramids. It is actually the second dam built on the Croton river, so the signs call it, The New Croton Dam. All the masonry was imported from Italy. Work began in 1892 and finished, after a number of labor problems in 1910. Roosevelt’s Rough Riders were called in to put down one labor strike.
